Teachers in Akwa Ibom have called off their strike.

Teachers in Akwa Ibom State's public elementary and secondary schools have stopped their strike against the state government over years of unpaid benefits.

In a statement signed in Uyo on Sunday, the head of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Edet Emenyi, and the secretary, Sam Umo-Inyang, said that the strike was over.

The union said that the decision was made after Udom Emmanuel, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, met with them in Uyo on Sunday.

It said that starting in May, the state government would pay primary and secondary school teachers 50% of the 7.5% contributory salary returns. The union said that the state government has ordered the payment of three years' worth of leave grants starting on Tuesday and has also agreed to pay six years' worth of promotion debts to teachers who deserve it.

It also said that the government had promised to send teachers in the state their job letters for 2021 and 2022.

"Because of all of this, the Nigeria Union of Teachers is stopping the strike. "The union also tells teachers in all public elementary and middle schools in the state to go back to work right away," the statement said.

The strike was the second one in less than two years. It was a continuation of the strike that teachers in the state called off in March 2022.

The strike had stopped everything in the state's public schools, so students who were starting their third term had to go home.

"The Union is proud of how the teachers in the state worked together as a team while the strike was going on," the statement said.
